LARRY CARLTON

"I get asked often why my first cd is all instrumental. Answer: Singers are a dime a dozen; a painfully large number of them know nothing about playing music. They want to be instant stars without going through the work of learning how to play an instrument.

I played guitar and keyboards long before I sang my first note. I want people to hear the reason for the music first...that being my guitar and keyboard playing..."

Kevin's main electric guitars include a custom made Carvin CT-6, and a limited edition Fender 50th Anniversary Stratocaster. His acoustic electrics include a custom made Carvin NS-1 nylon string guitar, an Alvarez classical, and a Carvin Cobalt 750. For backline amplification he uses a Carvin Nomad amplifier. This amp uses vaccum tubes which gives him the warm vintage tube sound that he likes. For guitar effects, he uses a Digitech RP250. He also plays a Roland Juno D keyboard. His sound system is powered by Carvin LM15A speakers and a Carvin 1801 sub; sound mixing is done with a Yamaha mixer. His self created backup music is accomplished by utilizing MIDI sequencing technology. Once he creates a song from scratch, playing EACH and EVERY note himself, he stores his music on a laptop computer. This computer is then MIDI interfaced to a Roland JV1010 sound module. This is very similiar to any sound module housed inside of a keyboard. This module gives him all of the backup sounds heard in his songs: bass guitar, keyboards, horns, drums, organ, strings, etc. From there, another MIDI cable feed goes to a Digitech Vocalist voice harmonizer. This unit gives him all the vocal harmonies heard in his songs, again, played in the creation process on a keyboard. This rounds out his MIDI signal chain.
